Water Trio of Europe(WTE) [Croatia, Cyprus, Malta]

" Croatia, along with Cyprus and Malta, once again were the top three nations in Europe when it came to the sea water quality and clearness."
- European Agency for the Environment. 2015.

22,000 localities were tested, from Great Britain and the North Sea to the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, indicating that Croatia, along with Malta and Cyprus, has the best quality of sea for bathing in Europe.
Croatian beaches possess some of the cleanest waters in Europe, according to the latest annual bathing water report for 2014…
Croatia, along with Cyprus and Malta, once again were the top three nations in Europe when it came to the sea water quality and clearness. The report, which has been produced now for over 20 years, reported results from water samples at 917 beaches in Croatia with 99% of the samples returning excellent or good results. Bathing sites at beaches, rivers and lakes across Europe are regularly tested for harmful pollutants and bacteria, such as E. coli, which may indicate the presence of sewage or livestock waste and help form the European Environment Agency’s annual report. “Just like the last 4 seasons, the water quality is excellent or good in 99% of the tested areas. We are extremely proud of that. Our goal is that it stays that way,” Croatia’s Environmental Minister said.
The excellence of the sea for bathing in Croatia is above the European average. Namely, the water is of excellent quality in 77.1% of European localities, and of satisfactory quality in 93% of the seaside beaches, communicated the European Agency for the Environment.

Malta was already amongst one of the cleanest beach holiday destinations in Europe. 85 out of 87 sites scored an impressive 98.7% and were deemed ‘excellent’ quality by officials.  This is a 3.2% increase on 2010, where Malta and Gozo were named third best, with a 94.5% score for their beaches water quality.

Cyprus scored a excellent 97.8% Overall, the percentage of beaches in the European Union that met the standards was an encouraging 94%, which is an increase from 2011..It is a notable improvement from 2012, when there were several locations that failed to meet the EU’s beach standards, including a high percentage of sites in Britain where sewage had been washed into the water.
The three countries keep exchanging places between them on European scale for the last 20 years with usual standing being Cyprus, Malta and Croatia before in 2014. Croatia took the first place pushing Cyprus back to the third place while Malta has remained at second place.

Since the Adriatic Sea contains more than 80 essential minerals and oligoelements, including those with positive effects on nasal mucosa, and the Adriatic coast abounds in medicinal herbs, it is easy to understand why the Adriatic is a favorite destination for many navigators, explorers, tourists and all those who wish to experience the best of nature - pure and clear water rich with minerals and living organisms, and intact natural surroundings with mild climate and beautiful panoramas.

Diplomatic relations were established at 4th February 1993.
The relations between our two countries are excellent. Croatia and Cyprus are both Mediterranean countries, EU member states with rich history and abundant cultural heritage, which have friendly and nice people, boast with a lot of sun and sea, possess many natural beauties and are among the most admirable tourist destinations in Europe and globally. This is an excellent basis for our future cooperation. As a new EU member state Croatia appreciates the results of the Cypriot EU Presidency in the second half of 2012.
Particularly to stress out are good progresses made in the field of maritime policy, among others by the Limassol Declaration, building a solid basis for further development in this area which is right now one of the priorities of the Hellenic EU Presidency as well. This is of particular importance for all the Mediterranean countries, Croatia included. Therefore two countries have, much in common and, while performing my duties, I will try to build upon this common ground in mutual benefit.
As Croatian delegate stationed in Nicosia said, he would make sure, that he will use all his potentials, knowledge and capabilities to promote the already existing friendly relations between our countries and to work towards their enhancement. Croatian delegate was happy to express his satisfaction with the very good level of bilateral relations that both countries enjoy. Following the accession of Croatia to the EU, they look forward to further developing o bilateral relations and extending it to new fields. At the same time, as Mediterranean EU member states, wish to give particular attention to the Mediterranean dimension of the European Union. In general, the economy is expected to improve this year and the next. Despite the positive results, the Government is fully aware of the challenges ahead and is taking measures that aim to reinvigorate the economy, boost investments and create jobs. A campaign has been initiated to attract foreign investments. Measures have also been taken to support SMEs, tackle rising unemployment, support the tourism industry and promote social cohesion.

Malta and Croatia enjoy excellent bilateral relations, the commencement of which dates back to June 1992. Apart from tourism and collaboration in transhipment operations, Malta’s ideal geographic location attracts business flows directed to the EU or North Africa while Croatia is Malta’s gateway to south-eastern Europe. Maltese Foreign Minister Michael Frendo and his Croatian counterpart Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic have pledged to improve the already “excellent” bilateral relations between the two countries.
During official talks yesterday, Dr Frendo and Ms Grabar-Kitarovic also pledged to increase cooperation at all levels between the two countries. Dr Frendo said the two had fruitful discussions on several topics, especially in the context of Croatia’s European Union membership bid.Dr Frendo said Malta is pleased that Croatia has applied to join the European Union, adding that Malta was one of the countries which was “pushing hard” for the EU to start negotiations with Croatia. The two foreign ministers signed a protocol of collaboration to further political cooperation and also the exchange of diplomats on short assignments in each other’s ministries.
On her part, Ms Grabar-Kitarovic said that Croatia plans to expand its bilateral relations with Malta since "We believe that we share the same future within the European Union, also with our Mediterranean dimension. We are interested in concessions Malta has managed to attain during its negotiations with the EU prior to membership, particularly that on the movement of workers and the sale of real estate.” Both foreign ministers mentioned the possibility of organising business trips to Croatia and vice versa in order to allow entrepreneurs explore the possibility of investing in Croatia and Malta. On the one hand, Croatian companies have expressed a particular interest in investing in Malta's electronic component sector. On the other, Maltese construction companies and businessmen are involved in Croatian healthcare services and have managed to establish good business relations in yachting and merchandising. Other areas of interest for Maltese investors are namely the educational and cultural sector, tourism, and maritime and aquaculture.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tonio Borg said that Malta and Croatia can significantly improve their trade relations and create new opportunities for investment between both countries.During the visit to Croatia, Dr Tonio Borg held bilateral meetings with his Croatian counterpart, Gordan Jandrokovic. He argued that despite the high level of exchanges between Malta and Croatia, both countries can do more to reinforce their relations in many fields. Such relations can be improved in trade and investment, tourism and culture and the financial services.

The excellent relations between Cyprus and Malta, as well as the need to further promote the two countries’ Mediterranean dimension were among the issues that the Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou discussed with the President of Malta Edward Fenech-Adami. Kyprianou was received by the President of Malta. During the meeting, the wish of both countries to further enhance their relations and to promote issues of common interest was ascertained. Kyprianou also briefed the President of Malta on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus problem. The political relations are close due to similarities between the two countries on historical, economical and regional view. By May 2004, the two island countries, along others, entered the European Union.
During the talks that Kyprianou had with his counterpart Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta Tonio Borg, the establishment of a joint Cyprus -Malta diplomatic representation in Ramallah was agreed. The goal of the two sides is for the agreement to be implemented by the end of 2008. It was also agreed for the diplomatic services of Malta to share the premises of the Diplomatic Mission of the Republic of Cyprus in Tel Aviv.
The two Ministers also discussed the issue of illegal immigration, one of the greatest problems the two countries are facing due to their geographical position.
Both countries are former British colonies. With the dismantling of the British Empire following World War II, Cyprus and Malta were granted independence, in 1960 and 1964 respectively. Cyprus became a republic, while Malta kept the Queen as head of state until 1974. Both joined the Commonwealth. The Knights of St John had a long history on Cyprus before retreating to Malta, and even then they were a major force in the Mediterrannean. In 2005, Malta's High Commissioner for Cyprus Saviour John Balzan pledged support for the reunification of Cyprus to Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos.
